TICKETS TORN IN HALF:AUGUST 11,1976- ELTON JOHN (sixth time)/KIKI DEE@Madison Square Garden. WPLJ ,the NY radio station gave buttons to the attendees of this seven night stand at THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA. The band consisted of the musicians playing on his last two endeavors, ROCK OF THE WESTIES and BLUE MOVES.Tonight they opened up with GROW SOME FUNK OF YOUR OWN, performed LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS, DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART with Kiki Dee(the #1 Hit record in America that day),and closed with SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALRIGHT (for Fighting) before being called back for YOUR SONG and PINBALL WIZARD. Well worth the price of admission.
Elton John undoubtedly is one of the great pop pianists of our time. Billy Joel is another one.
I’ve never seen John. When I read about his farewell tour, I was thinking about it. While I like many of his ‘70s stuff, I’m mostly lukewarm about the music he recorded thereafter except for the “Too Low For Zero” album from 1983, which I think is a gem.
I just don’t feel particularly drawn to seeing him, especially given ticket prices. I think I’d rather go to Joel a second time.

Saw Billy Joel when we were both neighborhood kids. He was in THE HASSLES playing a Hammond B-3, saw him during the first COLD SPRING HARBOR album and again during the PIANO MAN tour when he opened for Capt Beefheart and J Geils Band (Feb 1972). one other time with a free ticket. While quite entertaining he is not my cup of tea, especially after he fired Liberty his drummer and the rest of the band. But 100 nights at Madison Sq Garden is nothing to sneeze at.
