TICKETS TORN IN HALF:August 16,1979-Talking Heads/ B-52’s @Wollman Rink in Central Park

(NYT) The combination of the Talking Heads and the B‐52’s seemed one of the strongest bills at the 1979 Dr Pepper Festival, but it took three tries for the concert to take place. The first two efforts were rained out, and it was only Thursday that the pairing finally got to make music in Central Park.

(me)WHAT A BLAST…this was so much fun when it finally took place. The B-52’s were brand new, having a bit of air play with “Rock Lobster” on Meg Griffin’s PIX PENTHOUSE PARTY radio shows. Fun to see, better to hear live. Then the T Heads took the stage and were fantastic, as usual. CITIES was  my song of the night.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF:August 16,1971: PROCOL HARUM/MYLON@ WOLLMAN RINK in Central Park (STUB/photo)

I took a former short term ex-girlfriend to this show and our date was just like seeing PROCOL HARUM without ROBIN TROWER (who left the band for a solo endeavor), lackluster, mostly songs from Broken Barricades.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF:August 5,1972 MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA/TAJ MAHAL@ WOLLMAN RINK in CENTRAL PARK

My first Mahavishnu Experience with John McLaughlin, Jerry Goodman (The Flock), Rick Laird, Billy Cobham, and Jan Hammer. The band was unbelievably good. A hot evening in Central Park listening to tunes from their first two albums as the sun faded away into night. Loved it and so did my brother who was leaving for college in a few weeks.Taj Mahal was, as always, amazing. This was an unbelievable bill, so much fun.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF: August 4,1973- FOCUS/Livingston Taylor @ WOLLMAN RINK

HOCUS POCUS was in steady rotation on the FM stations so I thought this would be worth a shot. Livingston Taylor was advertised to be the opener (?), what were the promoters thinking. He cancels and ELEPHANTS MEMORY plays instead, smart move.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF: August 3,1970-JETHRO TULL @WOLLMAN Rink

Jethro Tull and Haystacks Balboa at Central Park was another one of those bills were the head act brings along a lesser known label mate to open the show. This lesser known act included Leslie West’s brother on guitar (HB) and they stunk. Then, Jethro Tull was introducing some new songs, one being MY GOD. Overall, Tull was musically good but lyrically not my cup of tea any longer and most of the crowd was unfamiliar with the new stuff. Musically, it was a tough night. However, TULL was destined for bigger things and real soon. And I got a MY GOD bootleg outside the venue, for free. But, that’s another story altogether.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF JULY 29,1970: JOHN SEBASTIAN/ MANHATTAN TRANSFER/INFANCY @ WOLLMAN RINK in Central Park What a glorious day in NEW YORK CITY. The sun was slowly fading behind the skyscrapers as we were seated not too far from center stage. Off to our right in his usual seat was Beau Bridges. Pete Fornatale of WNEW-FM was our emcee for the evening introducing MANHATTAN TRANSFER, a new act. The Transfer was pretty cool, unique for the times and Sebastian did a shit load of Spoonful tunes which I loved. To this day I still have a bootleg cassette I recorded that evening.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF July 26,1976 DERRINGER/NILS LOFGRIN @WOLLMAN RINK in Central Park :This double bill was the draw so my friend Bobby and I headed in to Manhattan afterwork. What a great show it was. Nils did a backwards flip during his guitar solo, played CRY TOUGH (opener)KEITH DON’T GO, with a GRIN tune was thrown in and a CRAZY HORSE number for good measure. Rick DERRINGER was also “on” that night as he opened with STILL ALIVE and WELL, played ROCK N ROLL HOOTCHIE KOO with YOU REALLY GOT ME tease in the break and encored with REBEL REBEL. Not too shabby and KENNY, our boy from Brooklyn was on bass. Couldn’t get backstage after the show, oh well.

My ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND obsession began in March of 1971 at FILLMORE EAST and continued for the most part throughout the years up until the very end of the band for a grand total of over 50 perfomances. Funny as I calendarize my shows I found 3 separate shows for the same date JULY 21 in various years.

TICKETS TORN IN HALF- July 21

(ABB Show #6) July 21, 1971: ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND/ COWBOY @Wollman Rink in Central Park was an experience.Met up with a buddy in a tavern prior to the show. In the park the sun was shining brightly as the ABB hits the stage and they finished hours later in the calm of an early evening. Duane was in his element. Photos galore. Two shows that night,we had the early one.

This two night stand at MSG followed two sell outs with the Grateful Dead at RFK stadium , 80,000 seats each night, only a month before.
