Today is the “Meet up at the movies with the Grateful Dead” day. Check your local papers for a theatre near you.

A tradition will continue when 500+ theaters across the country will host the 8th Annual Grateful Dead Meet-Up At The Movies at 7 p.m. on August 1. This year’s event will feature screenings of the Grateful Dead’s July 7, 1989 performance at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia.

The Grateful Dead’s lineup at the time featured guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, keyboardist Brent Mydland, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Newly-remastered footage of a show originally released in 2010 as Crimson White & Indigo will be presented by Fathom Events and Rhino Entertainment on what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 76th birthday. Highlights of what turned out to be the final concert held at the venue include a gorgeous “Standing On The Moon,” Mydland leading “Blow Away” and a stellar “Scarlet Begonias”/”Fire On The Mountain” sequence.
